Job Description

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS) system—the 18th largest school system in the nation—is looking for an Employee Relations Specialist to perform professional work in the area of human resources and problem resolution. As a part of Human Resources, the Employee Relations team knows there is a direct correlation between employee satisfaction and the success of our District. Thus, our goal is to develop and implement employment strategies that will boost employee morale and ensure we retain employees who are committed to the District’s mission and goals.

Employee Relations assists our General Counsel, HR Directors and administrators in improving work performance of certified and non-certified employees, complying with federal and state employment laws and regulations, and adhering to Board of Education (BOE) policies.

As an ER Specialist, you are responsible for administering Employee Relations functions for assigned learning communities to include: discipline, termination process and performance management. This position requires a high level of independence, accuracy, sound judgment and expertise to determine appropriate methods of handling a very high volume of complex legal and disciplinary issues to mitigate risks.

The ideal individual for this position:

Is adept at Problem Resolution and Conflict Management – you will serve as mediator to negotiate the resolution of problems with employees, or between employees and their supervisors that have not been resolved within their work unit.
Can Interpret and Explain laws and policies – you will need to rely on knowledge of state and federal laws such as Title VII, FMLA, and Americans with Disabilities Act as they relate to employment, as well as stay up-to-date with BOE policy and procedures.
Is Organized, Reliable, and a Clear Communicator-you will conduct personnel investigations and direct CMS law enforcement to conduct investigations when appropriate. After reviewing final investigation reports and determining appropriate personnel action, you will communicate outcomes to employees, managers and administrators. You will also prepare correspondence reflecting the research and results of corrective action and present policy to new employees at orientation.
Additional Qualifications:

Required: A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field and three (3) or more years of direct Human Resources experience; or Combination of education and experience
Desired: Master’s Degree in Human Resources and five (5) or more consecutive years of direct employee relations experience and/or SPHR, PHR, SRHM-SCP certification.
